The Benediction

HRH Prince Charles, Colonel-in-Chief, passes the Colours at the start of the Laying Up ceremony.  The Regimental Association was drawn up in fine order, and the Association Drums & Pipes provided music.  The Highlanders provided the Colour Guard.  The Colonel-in-Chief spent a considerable amount of time talking with members of the Association during his review.  After the review, the Colours were marched off to the Sir Jack Hayward room in the museum for the service.

Order of Service

The Chaplain extended his greetings to the Colonel-in-Chief, and to the officers and men of the Regiment.

Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise (St. Denio)

Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes
Most Blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, thy great Name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above, Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love

To all, life thou givest - to both great and small; In all life thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish - but naught changeth thee.

Great Father of Glory, pure Father of Light, Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight
All laud we would render: O help us to see, 'Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.

(Chaplain): Almighty God, we now lay up within this place these emblems of your grace and blessing.  May all who look upon them ever be reminded of the courage and devotion of all who served their Regiment in past days.

(All):  May we all be Reminded of our duty to God and our Queen and country towards the preservation of peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

2 Timothy 4:1-8 was read by Lieutenant General Sir John MacMillan, KCB CBE.

The Chaplain gave a brief address.

The Gordon Highlander's Collect
O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst bid Thy Disciples watch and pray, give Thy sufficient grace to the Gordon Highlanders, that we may ever be watchful for the honour of our Fathers, and may ever pray that our faith faíl not, but that we may watch in all things and endure afflictions for Thy sake who art with the Father and the Holy Ghost, One God, World without end. Amen.

The Queen's Colour was given to Lieutenant General Sir Peter Graham, KCB, CBE.
The Regimental Colour was given to Colonel JMW Stenhouse, OBE, MVO

(Chaplain):  These Colours are now given to the Regiment. for safe keeping in St Luke’s and shall remain here as a memory of past glories and to be an inspiration to future generations.

Jesus Calls Us! O’er the Tumult (St Andrew)

Jesus calls us! O’er the tumult, Of our life’s wíld restless sea,
Day by day his voice is sounding, saying, ‘Christian, follow me’

As, of old, Saint Andrew heard it By the Galilean lake,
Turned from home and toil and kindred, Leaving all for his dear sake.

Jesus calls us from the worship Of the vain world's golden store,
From each idol that would keep us, Saying, ‘Christian, love me more.’

In our joys and in our sorrows, Days of toil and hours of ease,
Still he calls, in cares and pleasures, ‘Christian, love me more than these.’

Jesus calls us! By thy mercies, Saviour, make us hear thy call,
Give our hearts to thy obedience, Serve and love thee best of all.

As Gen. Graham and Col Stenhouse marched the Colours out, silence was kept.

A lone piper (Bill Blacklaw, Drums & Pipes of the Regimental Association) played the lament and reveille.

God Save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen
God Save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen!

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
‘God save the Queen!’

The Chaplain gave the benediction, and the service was concluded.  Afterwards, the Museum laid on an exceptional reception.  Old comrades had the opportunity to catch up, and the Colonel-in-Chief met informally with guests.
