Bydand Forever in Scotland?
Yes, we are looking into making our first UK tour since the
Huntly 2000 celebrations. Plans are only in the early stages, but
we're hoping to be in Scotland during the last two weeks of July 2009.
Though it does not appear that we'll be permitted to attend the regimental
events in Aberdeenshire during that time, we hope you'll see us elsewhere,
perhaps Inverness and Edinburgh.
We'll keep you posted as things progress....
Hi; I think that photograph is round the wrong way. 1955/56
Hi; I think that photograph is round the wrong way. 1955/56
Hello Webmaster, I have looked at the pictures on the history page. I confirm that the picture of the indian Army soldiers with the Gordons on the left side of the picture is genuine. However the picture above is not one that I sent to you. The second of the two slides was without doubt showing the Gordons in the position where the Indiam soldiers are. Somewhere in the whole process the slide showing the Gordon contingent has has been misplaced. My email address is bill@bill1928.orangehome.co.uk
Webmaster I have today 230608 viewed to picture you claim to be the Gordon Highlanders in New Delhi India 1955/56. Pleas be assured the two 35mm slides I sent to you over a year ago were definitely the Highlanders and and an Indian regt at the war memorial in New Delhi. The picture you put on the web site on 20th June is not in any way shape or form the slides I sent to you. The tartan worn by the Guard is nothing like the Gordon tartan. The group following the kilted soldiers are not an Indian regt. I have no idea who they are but they are certainly not Indian soldiers. Could you please check once more for the correct slides I sent to you. Bill Eagles
WEBMASTER'S Note: Bill...please be in touch (pcpl.kelly@bydand.com). I tried contacting you, but can't quite make out your e-mail address. These are definitely the slides I received; please also take a look at the versions that are on the regimental history section. We'll get it sorted....isk.
The photo of the Gordon's has been printed in reverse. The sash comes off the right shoulder and the Bydand on the left of the Blue Bonnet.

To produce a child like Sandie you must have been some sort of man Charlie. I did not know you very well but I know Sandie your daughter. The world has lost a great person and unfortunately you only had two children that I am aware of. Charlie thank you for those two. You were obviously a man and a half.
Dear webmaster further to my note of 3 Jun regarding 35 mm slides of a Gordon Highlanders Guard of Honour 1n 1955/56. I forgot to mention that this particular guard of honour took place in New Delhi India. Hoping to see tham displayed on the website. Thank you in anticipation. Bill Eagles
WEBMASTER'S Note: The slides are proving something of a task to get converted to an electronic format without doing some kind of violence to the originals, but work on that is progressing. Thanks very much for your patience and we'll have them posted as soon as my photo whiz can get it sorted out. PS: As of 20/6/2008, the photos have been posted on the history page as well as on the primary Gordon Highlanders' page.
Dear webmaster some time ago (over a year) I sent two 35mm slides of aguard of honour of Gordon Highlanders in1955/56. I was expecting to see tham on the web site but to date I have not seen them. Could you check if they were put on the website. Bill Eagles

Hi to all the wonderful people on this site ! My best friends father (Les Dunn) and Uncle (George Dunn) both served with the Gordons ! I have adopted Les as my honourary Popand he is the closest thing to a Grand father my children have, as he is the most wonderful man in the world, Unfortunately Uncle George passed away about 10 years ago but Les Dunn is alive and kicking and still getting into mischief! If anyone has any memories or pictures of either Les or George Dunn please get in touch and I can pass any messages to Les if required . Kind regards Ampy Kaur
My great grandfather Charles Davidson Dunbar (born July 17, 1870 in Halkirk, Scotland) was in the original Bydand Gordon Highlanders. There is a museum in Hamilton, Ontario Canada that is an excellent museum and has a whole display devoted to Charles Dunbar who was the Pipe Major of the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders regiment in Hamilton, Ontario. I have some of his staghorn sterling silver pendants. One is surrounded by a wreath of ivy and underneath the staghorn it reads BYDAND I am working on writing his biography.
Had an uncle or two that might have served with the Gordon Highlanders during the First World War. Neil and Donald MacDougall from Glasgow, Scotland. Is there any way that I can check this out? Yours Aye Jim Williamson

My Name is Chris Hart and I'm 38 yrs old my grandfather fought for his country in world war 2. His name is Arnold Nicholson Bedford from Barnsley South Yorkshire and passed away on the 03.04.2008 aged 83 years young with cancer of the lung. He didn't mention the War much to us as kids & don't think Nan like to be reminded of it. However, we later found out that he served in the 2nd Battalion of the Gorden Highlanders. He was wounded on active duty on hill 112 He was involved in Operation Epsom and the Scottish Corridor his regiment number I believe is 14624527 do any of you guys out there know or have any further info? He was and still is a great man and will be forever in our hearts.
I want to thank the Gary McMaster and Robbie McKnight for the lovely dances at the Riverside Dickens Festival. The Gordon Highlanders truly added to the experience and pagentry. I can't imagine enjoying the festival without their contributions.

Hi all, Donald Syme here, I have just been browsing through some of the comments and decided I should enter into the fun. To everyone that knows me from the past would like to hear from you. 1966 - 1979. Jist for some more info, my email address is [removed to prevent him from getting spammed] for some reason the link would not allow me to finish the bit before the @ sign.
WEBMASTER'S Note: The user name field is limited in order to reduce this page's attractiveness to the spamming low-life of the internet. I've added the complete name above, so you should be good to go to contact Mr Syme.

Hello I am researching my Family History - my Great-grandfather ALEXANDER KEIR (born circa 1860)in Strathdon was in the Territorials and was Head of the Bucksburn Volunteer Detachment of the Gordon Highlanders. Queen Victoria came up to do an inspection that was held in Edinburgh which my Great-grandfather was in. The Queen came by train to Aberdeen via Bucksburn and it rained and rained and became known as the 188.. Wet Review. My Great-grandfather was in charge of training the troops. My Father remembered a photograph taken of Queen Victoria with all the regiment hanging above the fireplace in his Grandparents' home. This photograph has been lost. I just wondered if there was any information available about this or any photographs available - thankyou
I realise this is not a family history site but am trying to research Frances L Paterson, Sgt. Instructor, 6th. Btn.Gordons. Died of gunshot wounds in Buckie drill hall 31st. May 1913. Committed suicide in the hall. This Gent was the Grandson of my Gt.Gt.Grandmother hence the research. I cannot find Frances in 1901 Census. Wondered if the Btn was in South Africa. Please disregard if this is an intrusion of the site. Regards, James H. Paterson. P.S. admirethe efforts to keep the site free from pests.
WEBMASTER'S Note: 1st Gordon appears to have been stationed in England (Crownhill Barracks, Plymouth) in 1913, and 2nd Gordon was at Kasr-el-Nil (Cairo). For the 1901 census, both battalions were in South Africa. Having wandered through several of the census abstracts from the mid-nineteenth century, I believe there is a section that addresses men in the army serving abroad; perhaps this was carried through to 1901.
Have looked through Comments Pages. Listing of Paul Kershaw - Kershaw_P Sky.com seems to be his Email address. Tried to send him an Email today but it was rejected, address not being correct. Do you have contact with this man? I believe I served with his Father and would like to make contact. Paul is seeking information on behalf of Dad Dated - 24.07.2007. If you read this Paul get in touch johnwyatt77 @ btinternet.com
WEBMASTER'S Note: It appears that Mr Kershaw's address is Kershaw_P @ sky.com (you'll want to remove the blank spaces from that).
Hello, After recently attending my fathers funeral, my siblings and I were surprised to hear our father had joined the Gordon Highlanders Boy Service in 1963 at 16 years old. This is something we had never known. Can anyone enlighten us or point us in the right direction as to finding out more details about the boy service? Would there be records for this held?? Would love to hear from anyone - email christinejane0174 with the bit above LOL Cheers Christine

I would like to express how much I LOVED the concert given by The Gordon Highlanders at the Singapore Presbyterian Church, Orchard Road, when I was a little girl (1970's). That was my introduction to British military music; I am now an organist/piano technician living in America, but have NEVER forgotten The Gordon Highlanders. THANK YOU!
Hi y'all from the Aussie detachment of Bydand Forever, now in encampment in Newcastle north of Sydney again for another 11 month tour of duty. Got the Bundanoon Highland Games SW of Sydney coming up soon. Trusting all in the Battalion are well and the drill remains up to speck. Cheers Rosscoe "Doon Unda Mon".... arts_venture@optusnet.com.au
I am looking for any of the the Gordon Highlanders who went out to Swaziland in the early 1960s. I went to school at St. Marks High School, Mbabane, Swaziland in the late 1960s. Whilst I was there, I was curious about an emblem of crossed swords painted on the mountain face opposite the school, but no-one knew much about it other than a group of soldiers had painted it there. I have since found out that it had been painted by some of the Gordon Highlanders who went out there in 1963. I was wondering whether anyone who served in Swaziland might have any photographs of the crossed swords emblem painted on the mountain face in Mbabane (either old or recent). Any other photographs of your time in Swaziland that you would like to send me would also be welcome. Thank you.

He had 2 sons, both who subsequently served in the second World War. Both are now deceased, and I would like to know if his name is on a 'marker' of somekind, and if so, where. Hope you can help? In 2000 The Gordon Highlanders of the Bydand Forever Company of San Diego attended the Millenium Celebration of Huntley Aberdeenshire. My ex. Royal air Force colleague, Arthur watso, who lives in Aberdeen attended the celebration and sent me a wonderful picture of this marvellous group marching. His comment was that they were very good and some were not so young. A cherished picture. Regards. Jeff. Watkins
WEBMASTER'S Note: Yes, I suppose being a volunteer organisation we've got men older than would normally be in the service, but age does not dim the enthusiasm!

hi to all the mill band guys hope your all doing well
Good day, We are looking for information about my grandfather, Private John Ainsley, either 3rd Battalion or 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, (No.S/1689 - we think this was his correct army number), who was killed in action on 30th July 1916 at the Somme. He was originally from Durham, married to a girl from Aberdeen and my father was born in Aberdeen in May 1916. My father died a year ago - he also joined the Gordon Highlanders in 1936 (I think) and rose to the rank of Corporal or Sergeant, before transferring to the Pay Corp, sometime during WW2. We are trying to trace a bit of family history and if anyone has any information or can help, we would greatly appreciate it. All the best, George Ainsley
I had the great honour to host, as instructor officer (captain) in a commando training center in Givet (France) a company of your regiment in 1986 and I had the pleasure to meet a lieutenant, very tall. The company was very good in all combat technics and particularly in built up areas fight. Excuse me for my very poor english. I would like to go on my pleasure in develop contacts with veteran officers of the regiment who has ended with the Grande Armée de Napoléon. I had the honour to visit Waterloo battlefield with the lieutenant i can't remember the name. francoisveron @ hotmail.fr
The Gordon Highlanders London Association wish all Gordons wherever you are, A Guid New Year.

WEBMASTER'S Note: The Regimental Museum may be able to help out in this regard...they have a group of excellent researchers. You might try http://www.gordonhighlanders.com/home.cfm?p=research for help.
I am trying to find out if the family story that my GG grandfather, John Gordon, was a Sgt Major in the Highlanders in the 1800s can be substantiated. He was born in 1812 and had moved to Australia by 1860, so his time of service should fall in the range 1820--1859. [He died in Australia in 1863 within only a few years of his arrival and when my G grandfather was around 2 years of age.] Are such service records only available in an archive and, if so, which one? NOTE TO WEBMASTER: email fields do not allow enough characters for me to enter either part of my preferred email address, so I have had to revert to hotmail
WEBMASTER'S Note: If his papers have survived, they should be available at the National Archives (Kew, just outside London) in the WO 97 series. My apologies for the limitation on the e-mail fields. We have done this as part of our on-going efforts to deter spammers from plastering their #&@! all over the site. If you would care to privately send me your preferred address (see the 'contact us' page), I'd be pleased to post it for you. Merry Christmas to all, and a very happy New Year! isk.

what has happened to the bydand.net site ??????
WEBMASTER'S Note: A series of notes related to this question have been posted which I am condensing into this summary. After some inquiry, the site did seem to have a brief period of being unavailable (which Yours Truly can certainly appreciate...keeping these electrons moving in the right direction can be tricky from time to time), Pug had a note from John Calder that the site had been fixed and you're all welcome to join in the banter again.
I'm looking to trace someone who left a message on this site regarding Victor Roy Gibbs I have been in contact with an Ian Rowley who has said he was doing some research for a family member If you are that person I would like to make contact with you. Steve

I would also like to give the two medals I have to his "offical" grandchildren. Thank you Geraldine Harris

I am doing fine, still married to Caroline and have two kids both learning the Bagpipes "keeping up traditions". I would also love to here from any other guys who want to drop a note.
I think your idea to keep the regiment alive is great but do not forget that in wartime if you were wounded -you could be in hosp & the regiment move -you were then placed in the nearest highland regiment till you caught up with your own ---this was ok but years could pass before this happened and some then made a new home in the other regiment. My Mothers older brother died on the death railway (Gordon )her young brother (a Gordon )was wounded at normandy landing and ended up a Seaforth. GOD BLESS ALL SCOTTISH SOLDIER,S --Sincerely yours gjm crichton ( ex Seaforth Highlander ) ps FATHER WAS A ROYAL SCOTT

MESSAGE FOR DENIS MATTHEWS REGARDING HIS FATHER'S HISTORY. I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE BUT MY FATHHER-IN-LAW (NOW DECEASED) ANDREW DAVIDSON, WAS ALSO CAPTURED AND SPENT MANY YEARS IN PRISON OF WAR CAMP.HE HAD 'EMPTY' TATTOOED ON HIS BELLY AS IT WAS ALWAYS EMPTY. HE ESCAPED A COUPLE OF TIMES AS HE SPOKE GERMAN AND JUST WALKED OUT THE FRONT GATES. MAYBE THEY WHERE THERE SAME TIME. HE SERVED WITH 51ST HIGHLAND DIVISION. HE WAS VERY PROUD TO SERVE HIS COUNTRY PROUD TO BE A SOLDIER. HE HAD MANY A TALE TO TELL TO DISGUISE HOW HARD IT REALLY MUST HAVE BEEN. HOPE THIS BRINGS BACK A MEMORY FOR YOU.
My Grandfather was in the Gordon Highlanders from 1939 - 1945 . He was RSM William Lawie but i have no information on him and im not sure where to start can any one help get going.
WEBMASTER'S Note: The above has been moved from the Gordon Highlanders In Touch page...I'm sure Ms Ross would appreciate any information readers might have.
To former Mil band members my new e/mail address...Good to see your name up there Angus! hope you are well?
On the subject of tartan. I read some weeks ago that with typical disorganisation that one of the consequences of the adoption of BW/Argyle tartan for the RRS there were not enough kilts to go round all ranks!!! Has this been sorted yet?
Hello from Canada, Just wondering which tartan is used with the new cap badge on the balmoral?
WEBMASTER'S Note: The Royal Regiment of Scotland's tartan is 'Government' tartan or (since the 1881 reorganisation (see National Archives WO 359/3)) 'Tartan Highland No. 1'. While this is the name commonly known as Black Watch, what the RRS wears appears (to Yours Truly at least) to be a lighter version than what the Black Watch used to wear. Naming of tartans has been a major issue for the army since the 1881 reorganisation as the Government tries to avoid the appearance of favouritism for one battalion over another.
Just got up to date with modern tchnology, got online and found the website. Good to see so many old names, hope you're all doing well. Served in 1st Bn. Gordon Highlanders Singapore until the amalgamation at Redford Barracks. Now working offshore, beats the Mortar platoon!! Thanks Bins ;) Feel free to get in touch.
HI PUG NEW E-MAIL [warrior_838@hotmail.com]have tried to mail u but no reply hear from you soon MEL ELLIOTT
Hi Lads. Hope you can help by going to this link and signing the petition. As we are all Ex / Members of a Great Scottish Regiment its only right we should help them with this. Thanks, Jocky. http://www.petitiononline.com/saltire/
My name is Angus Bannerman served with the Regiment from 1958-1969 with the Military Band. I should like to contact any former members that are still around. I live in Ontario Canada in a small town called Wasaga Beach. I do like the site it's such a wonderful idea someone had and we Gordons are all over the world.
I was up at Edinburgh Castle recently. My mind went back to a day in 1964? when I was guard commander, changing of the guard and all that jazz. No one was on guard when I was there, do they bother these days? Back in 1964, as you went over the bridge in the castle, I think there were steps leading down to the " moat". It was very early morning and I was expecting the duty officer any moment, unfortunately one of the lads was down in the moat discussing the meaning of life with one of the local lassies. I managed to persuade him to get the hell back to the guard room, just in time. Phew.
WEBMASTER'S Note: Great story. The MoD announced several years ago that it was doing away with the ceremonial guard at Edinburgh Castle as it detracted from military efficiency. One must think that having a couple jocks at the gate is far better than the full bands and guards that march around Buckingham Palace every day...of course that's just for the tourists. Were the jocks at the Castle fulfilling any less of a role?
Barry Williams I served with you in the mortar platoon with Gordon Laing, Cowboy, Ginge Donaldson and Minto its been along time Iam living in Chester married with 2 sons it was nice to know you are still about if you want to get in touch send an e-mail and I will give you my telephone number All The Best For Now John Bydand
Webmaster, Well done. Keep up the good work. Dont let these spammers spoil a very good site. Mike (pug). BYDAND.
WEBMASTER'S Note: Thanks, Pug. It's an on-going battle!!
There have been several requests for info about Gordons serving with the 1st Bn in WW2, perhaps the following may help. "So Few Got Through" is the title of a book describing the actions mainly of the 1st Bn The Gordon Highlanders but also of the 5th/7th from Normandy to the Baltic. It was written by Martin Lindsay who was CO at the time so its a bit officerish, but a good read. To quote from the book " On D Day the 1st Bn landed with 27 Officers and 565 men - by the following April - it had lost no less than 75 officers and 986 men". If your into books about the Gordons " The Perilous Road to Rome and beyond" by Edward Grace is the story of the 6th Bn in Italy and North Africa. Both books are available from Amazon.
WEBMASTER'S Note: Great recommendations Trevor. I might add that So Few Got Through is also available through the Regimental Museum...you get a great book and support a great organisation!

My Father Richard James Randall was transferred to the 1st Gordon Highlanders on 5th August 1944 until 25th February 1945 and served in Holland (I think) and Germany. He was wounded twice, I have the letters to my mother dated 13th November 1944 & 2nd March 1945, that informed her he had been wounded and was hospitalised. I am trying to find out where the Regiment was around those dates, any information would be gratefully received
I am looking for a service record for my grandfather, Mr T.E. Yetton in the first world war.
Hell I know my Granfather served with the regiment somwhere around the 1880 timeframe. Is there any way of confirming this His name was Henry Harlond. I have no knowledge if he was an officer I actually expect he was an enlisted soldier. Sorry I cannot be specific with the date but assume as he was born 1862 he would have been 17 or 18 when serving. Very many thanks - I treasure a BYDAND beautiful badge saved from my fathers effects. Best Regards Bob Harlond - British Columbia Canada
I'm Mr Bydand
Mr S. Thomson I am extremely saddened to hear of the passing away of Norrie I served with Norrie between 1975-1983 last posting together was saighton camp chester I still live in chester I would be grateful if you could e-mail me with funeral arrangements. I extend my best wishes to his family at this sad time J.V
I am looking for any information on my Grandfather's George Burn, he was a regimental sergeant major with the Gordon Highlanders based in Aberdeen, and would be 106 if he was alive today. I know that he fought in WWW1 in WW2. Most of his army career was near Aberdeen, though he was born in Newcastle. It would be lovely to hear from anyone who might have any memories of him. As a child I used to ask him about the wars, but he kept his feelings very private, I know he liked being in the Gordon Highlanders, as he was in it for over twenty years. I love and miss my Grandfather, he died in 1974 when I was eighteen.
i'm trying to find details about a great uncle pte douglas smith gordon highlanders, he was born in auchenblae 1890s son of joseph smith and isabella colville.i've tried cwgc site and can't see match. his brother sgt david milne smith 1bn black watch died at ypres 15.11.1914
My Father was a Gordon Highlander in the late 50's and given that he died when I was very young was interested in his past. His name was Robert Croly Scade.

I know he was wounded at Vimy Ridge in 1917 but other than that i have no knowledge,as he never spoke about the war from the day he left the service.
looking for grandfathers war history
Hi Would any one out there be able to supply me with any information on the 1st Battalion the Gordon Highlanders during the period 1944 to 1947. My father Edgar Kershaw served with the regiment during this period through France, crossing the rhine, Germany and after the war Palestine. He is now 82 and his memory is not as clear as it was. Though he was born and breed in Yorkshire he is very proud of the fact he served with the Gordons. If any one remembers him or can supply me with any information i would ge most grateful. Many thanks
I posted a message a few months ago trying to find info about my father who served with the GORDONS in burma in WW2, his name was Norman Gray, sadly no longer with us, The reason i am posting again is that i was asking if it would be ok if i was to wear my late fathers medals on the next rememberance sunday parade, i know he would be proud for me to do this, and the ex servicemen at the local british legion think it would be fine, of course to be worn on the right side, the webmaster thought i would be "stealing my fathers glory" i would welcome any feedback on this, many thanks, kieth
WEBMASTER'S Note: Well, I'm not sure that I said that you'd be stealing your father's glory, but what I did write was just one man hazarding a guess. If the folks with the British Legion are content with it, then by all means do, and wear them proudly!

Hi Everyone! Greetings from Vancouver, Canada. The website is beautiful! Our Mum (Flett) grew up in Buckie and the men in her family served in the Gordon Highlanders. I'm sure no one would remember them after all these years; however, here's a story which you may enjoy: Mum was one of two flower girls at her aunt's wedding. She was so proud, wearing a blue silk dress from Aberdeen and riding to church in a carriage with her father. The groom and all the men were on 48 hour leave for the wedding - and just as the service was to begin, all the boats in the harbour were sounding their horns, the doors to the church opened and a man ran down the aisle shouting.... it was Nov 11, 11 am and armistice was just signed. Mum kept this memory with her forever.
I am looking for information on my Great Grandfather. He was a Lance Sergeant in the army - East Surrey division but based in Ship Street barracks Ireland. His father was also in the army a cashier. Both named Harry Bennett.

I'd like to know something of my late father's army history and believe he served with the Gordons, landing in Normandy on D Day where he was wounded. He may have been in the Royal Artillery before joining the Gordons. It would be helpful to know what battalions of the regiment were present on 6 June 1944 to narrow the fields down a little, please. I further believe he was invalided out of the army in late 1944 or early 1945. His name was Thomas Brookes and he came from Washington in Co Durham and he was born on 31 March 1914. With thanks and best wishes to all. Robert Brookes

I'm looking for information on my Quirie ancestors. We believe we are of Clan Gordon. Can anyone help me determine if the Quirie name is indeed associated with Clan Gordon? Thank you!!
Dear Sirs, We are trying to help a lovely old chap who served with the DLI, who was a POW from 1940 to 45, he wants to find out the name of the Man of Confidence for the workcamp he was held in so we can get some sort of recognition for the help he gave the young lads. The camp was e565 attached to Stalag 8b. There were two British lads who died, and we know this Sgt filled in a death report with British Officers, we are trying to locate these reports in the hope they might have his name on them. The two lads are: Pte Harry Williams, 4547839 5th Btn Hamphire Rgt Pte James Buchanan 3052796 1st Btn Royal Scots I wondered if your any members of your association might recall Pte Buchanan who died in April 1945 on the Death March from Poland to Regensberg. The men were put into a barn on the outskirts of Regensberg, some food was discovers, potatoes or turnips and a scuffle broke out. A German guard fired a single round into the rafters which ricocheted and struck Pte Buchanan in the head killing him. The Sergeant in charge of the British lads went by the nick name of Sgt "Krappitz", he was in his 40's, a stocky man with a round face, a nothern accent and had trouble pronoucing his r's (like Jonathan Ross) If anyone can remember this incident, or the death of Harry Williams who had a fall in the coal mine and struck his head on the rail line, or was held in work camp, e565 at Sierza-Wodna, attached to Stalag 8b. we would love to hear from them. Here is one for all Gordon Highlanders: A new book entitled Kill the Tiger by Peter Thompson will for the first time reveal what really happened to Highlander hero Colonel Ivan Lyon and his men when Operation Rimau went pear-shaped in 1944. Apparently, there will be some shocking new info. Rimau (Malay for Tiger) was conceived, planned and executed by Colonel Ivan Lyon of the Gordon Highlanders. The book reveals how in the final months of 1944, a group of British and Australian commandos set off on an ambitious secret mission. Their objective was to penetrate Singapore Harbour in top-secret one-man submarines called ‘Sleeping Beauties’, and to launch a daring attack on 60 Japanese ships at anchor. Lyon led a Z Force contingent of 21 men. They entered enemy waters aboard the British submarine HMS Porpoise on September 11, 1944. The force commandeered a Malay junk named the Mustika. Taking the Malay crew aboard the submarine, Z Force transferred their equipment to the junk and the Porpoise departed. On the day of the planned attack disaster struck. A patrol boat challenged the Mustika and someone on board opened fire. Their cover blown, Lyon had no option but to abort the mission. After blowing up the junk and the Sleeping Beauties, he ordered his men back to Merapas. However, Lyon led a small force of six other men into Singapore Harbour, where they are believed to have sunk three ships. Lyon and twelve others were killed in action soon afterwards. The remaining ten men were captured and later executed by beheading in July 1945. Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone has read it? Daniel Furst

My Grandfather, Peter Craig Buchanan, from Glasgow, served in 'The Gordon Highlanders' and i am trying to find out a bit more of his service history. I have a picture of him in full dress with what looks like R.S.M stripes in i believe 1923 aged 23.I also think he served in both wars, and remember him breaking his hip when falling off the kerb on one of his days back in Glasgow in the '60's when going to the Old Firm Cup Final to follow his beloved 'Gers! Any news would be appreciated.

my brother and I are trying to find out more about our great-uncle's time in the Gordons. His name was George Watson and he lived in Fraserburgh (Commerce Street I think). He was born in December 1918 and served in the TA during the 30's, he was then called up during WW2. We know that he was a prisoner of war and was repatriated on a hospital ship because he had TB.He died in Jan 1988 but we would love to find out more out his service. Our dad has some photos which we think were taken in the prison camp but unfortunately we don't have a note of his service number or anything useful to track him with. I can be contacted by email on craiglyn32 @ hotmail.com

Hello Christine Costilow.Delighted to discover that your father Scotty Macdonald served with the Ist Bn Gordon Highlanders which formed part of 6 Highland Brigade, 2nd Division based in Essen in the Rhur, Germany. I also served the 1st Bn during the same period as your father, however I didnt know him personally but it nice to learn that there are some of the old members of the Bn still around who served in the Gordons. I was in HQ Company with the Sniper section and some of buddies were Sandy Thomson, Johnny Milne, Lackie Woods, Geordie Woods. From Essen the Bn moved to Montgomerie Barracks in Berlin. The CO at the time was Lt Col V.D.G. Campbell who later commanded Scottish Command at the castle in Edinburgh. hope this wee biot of info reminds your dad of tyhe good times had by all in 1947 and 1948.
WEBMASTER'S Note: Christine...please also see Patrick Larter's entry on the Gordons In Touch page.

re www.bydand.net. Fine, there is so much crap on line these days, I was a bit worried. Will register asap.
Hello Guys, Pug pointed me over here - so, just to let you all know, yes, www.Bydand.net is run by an ex-Gordon Highlander, John Calder (1986 - Amalgamation) - Highlanders - 2005. I served in Hemer, Fort George, Falklands, (little trip on HMS York), Berlin and a couple stints in NI before we amalgamated. At the moment there are 70 Gordons registered just by word of mouth - mostly my generation, but anyone that can point, click and follow instructions can register - and will be more than welcome. I hope this clears up any concerns felt about Bydand.net being legitimate. BYDAND
Hi Trevor, ref, www.bydand.net it is run by a Gordon Highlander called John Calder who hails from Peterhead. It is above board mate. Mike (pug). BYDAND.
WEBMASTER'S Note: Thanks for the info, Pug!
Can the webmaster confirm (or not) that www.bydand.net is OK? I just have a feeling about it!
WEBMASTER'S Note: Hi Trevor...I took a look at the bydand.net site when the posting was made. I have no idea who is operating the site, and have no basis for determining whether it is OK or not. I have no particular reason to suspect it, but equally cannot vouch for it. As always with on-line interactions, caveat emptor! Addendum: Please see the updated information above....

I am the younger brother of the late General Asif Nawaz, Chief of Army Staff, Pakistan Army from 1991-93. I am completing a book on the Pakistan Army entitled Crossed Swords: Pakistan and its Army for Oxford University Press and also doing an entry on my brother for Oxford’s historical dictionary of Pakistan. I recall that my brother served as a young officer on secondment with the RoyGordon Highlanders i the British Army on the Rhine. I need confirmation of the period that he was there. I know it was around 1967 or 1968, probably mid 1968. But I need to be sure. He left to serve with the Royal Green Jackets in the UK after his stint with your regiment. Could someone please help me track down his period with the Gordon Highlanders? I shall be grateful for direct contact wiht any officers who served wiht him at that time in Germany. Thank you for your help on this. Shuja Nawaz 3808 Fort Hill Drive Alexandria VA 22310 USA Telephone 001-703 851 3857
Perhaps this was overlooked when you wrote, "If you would like to hear some music samples, please take a look at the list given on the links bar to the left." on the regimental music samples portion of the pages, but you may wish to consider giving credit to those actually performing. I am nearly certain these are recorded at the Edinburgh tattoo, and while the Gordon Highlanders may be who is performing, where you make the suggestion they listen to some music samples it implies your group made the recording. Perhaps a clearer menu would be in order as well. I applaud you for bringing history to life.
WEBMASTER'S Note: On one of the primary pages for the site, I indicate that recordings in the site are generally taken (with permission) from the Cock of the North CD (available through the Regimental Museum), though some (the solo samples) were made during the GS McLennan Invitational Piping Competitions. Point well taken, though, and I'll update that page shortly to be clearer.
Hi, My father served in the Gordon Highlanders during the second world war, his name was Norman Gray,he came from a little mining village called North Seaton Colliery near Ashington Northumberland,he served in Burma, he was also in India, I dont know what battalion he was in as he would not talk about the war, if anyone knew him or knows how i can find out about getting his sevice number i will be very greatful, Also would it be Ok to wear his medals on remeberance sunday, I know he would be very proud if he was still here with us.
WEBMASTER'S Note: Most records for World War II service men are maintained by the Ministry of Defense, Army Records Office, in Middlesex, though you may be able to find additional information by contacting the Regimental Museum (www.gordonhighlanders.com). I'm sure your father would proudly wear his medals on Remembrance Sunday, and I hope you cherish them as tokens of your father's sacrifices and courage. I think wearing them, though, would be claiming his honours for yourself...perhaps someone out there has a different point of view? Or other ideas on how to honour your father's service?
A few things- the Email ID window should allow more characters to be typed in. My ID is lancerpiper. Next thing is, I'd like to sign up to be a 'friend of the Gordon Highlanders Museum' if possible. Lastly, Will you have items from the museum store available online? The jackets and hats and fleeces and such are interesting and I might like to purchase a few things. I've been to the museum about three times, the last time being in 1997. It was a real 'eye opener' to see the changes at that time. Wow! I remember a regimental piper of Great War vintage who moved to Canada after the war and who appeared on a video made when the regiment paraded for the last time in 1994. He had donated his pipes to the museum. He passed away soon after. Do you know if those pipes are on display in the museum along with a short bio? thanks much Joel LaMarre
WEBMASTER'S Note: Sorry about limiting space, but we also need to do our best to keep internet low-life spammers under control and unanticipated field limitations is one of the ways to get that done. Anyone interested in joining up with the Friends of the Gordon Highlanders Museum can get additional information at http://www.gordonhighlanders.com/home.cfm?p=friends. Shop items are also available through the Museum's website, http://www.gordonhighlanders.com/ghshop/index.cfm. I believe the piper you refer to is Harry Lunan; I'm not sure what is on display at the Museum just now...I guess that gives you an excuse to go back!! The Museum has undergone some incredible changes since then.
Can anyone help locate my uncle,he is an ex Gordon called Arthur Riach.Last known to live in School Road,Brig o Don.I have seen his son(Nigel)in the guestbook but have had no reply to my e-mail.I need to speak to my uncle quite urgently so any help would be welcome, even a general area of where he moved to would be a start.Hope life is treating you all well. Bydand....
For all who served in "D" Coy during 1956/57, I was saddened to learn a couple of weeks ago that Bert GAMMIE had passed away after a long illness. Bert lived on the outskirts of Montrose and although I hadn't been in touch with him for many years, I was kept advised of his activities by Norman Fraser of Ellon, (also ex "D" Coy). Bert will be remembered as one of the oldest, if not the oldest, National Service members of the regiment at that time, as he had almost reached the "cut of age" of 28, by the time he was called up. Bert will be remembered for his pawky sense of humour and his total "unflappability," attributes that made him suited for NCO's stripes and he rose to the rank of sergeant in Cyprus, no mean feat for a National serviceman. Another of the "Cyprus veterans" has been "called up" again. Tom Morrice "D" Coy, 1st Bn 1955.57

Dear webmaster you emailed me on 4 Dec 2006 advising me that the 35 mm slides in colour of the Gordon Highlanders detachment at the war memorial in Nerw Delhi in India sometime in 1955 or 1956.Your reply advised me that you would try to me was that you would hope to have them on the web site in a few weeks. If you did aadd them to the site could you tell me which so that I can view. Thank you Aye Bill Eagles
WEBMASTER'S Note: I'm working on getting the slides converted to digital images...I want to be very careful not to damage the originals...Once that's done, I'll post them on the main page for the Gordon Highlander section of this site.

All the answers can be found in Andrew Lenz's web pages (pages? more like volumes!) www.bagpipejourney.com A visit is an absolute must for anyone even vaguely interested in piping /pipe bands. Very many thanks to webmaster, for all the hard work in keeping this site alive. Keep in touch. Bydand John Spoore

Hello all, it is always good to see some of the old names still cropping up from time to time. A reminder to all Gordons, that The Gordon Highlanders are still very much alive and thriving in "The Gordon Highlanders London Association" with a current membership of just over 200. Our members are not only in and around London, but world wide. (We were very sorry to hear this week of the death of one London Assoc. member - Brig. "Big John" Simpson, in NSW Australia) We hold an Annual Reunion Lunch in June each year, when we are delighted to dine with our ladies and guests. We field a Gordon Highlander Contingent for The National Remembrance Parade at The Cenotaph and hold regular informal meetings (for a pint and a blether). Annual subscription fees are less than the cost of a pint and there are two newsletters each year. For further details, contact (me) John Spoore (Hon. Secretary) at; jspooreWIGMORE @ tinyonline.co.uk. I await your call! John.
William McFarlane was a soldier in the Gordon Highlanders during WW1 and served in France to the best of my knowledge. We have a photgraphic protrait of him in uniform but know very little else of his time in the army. During the 1920's he emigrated to Adelaide with my grandmother and raised a family in Adelaide South Australia. My father is about to turn 80 (he is William's older son) and I would love to be able to provide him with some information on Grandpa. Thankyou
Hi, i've enjoyed looking through your site and it seems there are a couple of other people out there also looking for info on James Evett Clulow (pte num 234399 - i think!). He was my great grandfather, and i'm trying to trace anything to do with either him or his family. I would love any info anyone's got - my email address is michelle_bailey69 @ yahoo.co.uk. anything anyone's got would be useful, i've got hardly anything at the moment!!
Hi all. I served in the Gordons 72 to 94 and the Highlanders until 96. I had a great time and have many fond memories of my time in the Regiment. Especially my adventure training days (or should I say years!!) I've lived in Alford for the last 10 years and work offshore (rope access -abseiling - scenery is not as good as the Alps, but it beats working for a living!) It's good to see some of the guys I served with on the site. Miss the crack. BYDAND
Change of E-Mail address and also to say hello to all mil. band members who knew me.Also trying to find Roger Williams and Harry Shand Bydand
Just a wee note to say I have changed my e-mail address to: D.HOSSACK @ sky.com. I attended as a guest, along with Bob Harman and Nobby Clark, the London Scottish dinner on 23 Feb. The invitation was as a thank you to all PSIs who had served with the London Jocks. Unfortunately this was the end of the long relationship with the Gordon Highlanders as their permanent staff instructors. This duty is now performed by the Scots Guards. The dinner was excellent, and the opportunity to chat over old times was very gratifing. It had been thirty one years since I had last visited the London Jocks, when I was chaired out on the day I was demobed, in 1975. I am asked to pass on the message that all Gordon Highlanders would be made welcome at 95 Horseferry Road at any time. Iwas very impressed to see their drill hall as it was built as a replica of 59Buingham Gate, which I knew when I served with them. All the young men I knew there are all colonels generals or other high ranking hoy poloy, so that must be a sign that I am getting very old. Hope to hear from anyone soon. Regards. Don Hossack.
WEBMASTER'S Note: The London Scottish have, indeed, been wonderful to members of our regiment, keeping true to the very longstanding relationship. The drill hall is indeed beautiful. There are piping sessions on the first Thursday of the month, and the canteen is always warm and welcoming.
We are the best in the World. Sandy55
I am looking for any information on Kenneth Keith Stewart McKenzie who served in the Gordon Highlanders. He was taken prisoner of war at Dunkirk and was imprisoned in Stalag XX1A in Poland. Unfortunately he died during the forced marches in 1945. Any information on Kenny would be appreciated. He was a cousin to my father. kindest regards
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN IT WOULD BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED, IF YOU COULD SHARE WITH ME THE CORRECT WAY IN WEARING THE DRESS GORDON TARTAN (GREEN,BLUE AND WHITE) AS A MILITARY UNIFORM FOR WEARING IN A PIPE BAND. WE HAVE PIPERS AND DRUMMERS WHO OBVIOUSLY WEAR DIFFERENT PLAIDS AND CROSSBELTS. PLEASE LET US KNOW OF THE LENGTHS OF PLAIDS, POSITION OF FLASHES, SPORRONS, BROACHES AND KILT PINS AND CORRECT WEARING OF LACES IN BLACK SHOES. WE USE 150cm LENGHT LACES. THANK FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE IN THIS MATTER. LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR REPLY. PP. FAYE ROWE (MRS) CUSTODIAN RICCARTON AND DISTRICTS HIGHTLAND PIPE BAND (NZ)
WEBMASTER'S Note: As a civilian band, you're free to do as you see fit.
In military terms, there are very set ways for how the uniform should be worn,
each varying on the particular regiment. I would caution you against the
same mistake a very ill-informed American made ('Aw, that's a bunch of b-----t')
when P/M. Alasdair Gillies (Queen's Own/Highlanders) described how the kit was
aligned. If you're going with full dress kit (congrats! good
choice!), there is a photo of the regiment's last D/M. and P/M. on the Drums &
Pipes page. Click on the badge here to go to that page....

Hi all, I was wondering if there are any photographs of Stalag XX1a available. My father's cousin served in WW2 with the Gordon Highlanders and was taken prisoner at Dunkirk. Unfortunately he died on the forced marches. His name was Kenneth Keith Stewart McKenzie from Benderloch in Argyllshire. He was a piper also. Perhaps someone may have photographs or maybe someone may still be alive. I know that this camp was closed down and the inmates moved to another camp before the end of the war. with many thanks mary

I regularly look at the site a surf through the comments. Yes I remember some of the names ( soory I missed the Whitehall march past Don (Hossack)) but there are lots of mates who dont turn up on the site. I would love to be in contact with them, isnt there some way to create a register of ex Gordons, so that we could at least know where they were or (as we grow older) still alive. I attend the Gordon Highlanders Association Lunch in London, and normally the Remembrance Day Parade in London. Hope to see more of you there. Trevor Lindley 1st Btn 1960 -66 trevor @ farslack.co.uk

I am tracing my grandfather Charles Andrew Frederick who was born in Alloa on 1895. Have been told that he joined the Gordan Highlanders, but not sure what date, and have nop other information. Is there anywhere that I can contact where perhaps they have records of when he enlisted, what battles he fought in, and when he was de-mobbed. Would be very gratful for any information, that may help me. Thank you Adrian Bew
hi all you guys, i was the older brother of DONG great site and know a few names still see some faces around aberdeen. bydand
What a great site. Iam reading a book on WW1 at the moment,( Silent Night, the Christmas truce of 1914 ) and this website complements it nicely. My Grandfather, Fred Riach was with the Gordon Highlanders at the Somme, where he was awarded a medal for gallantry, when he recovered the body of a fallen comrade in no-mans land, under enemy fire. I wonder if anyone knows how to trace either the battle, the medal or the man?
WEBMASTER'S NOTE: The medals rolls or War Department records at the National Archives (Kew) would probably be able to fill in the information on the specific incided; War Department records are more useful, as the officer making the nomination for an award would have written out a detailed description of the event. There are several books out on the Christmas 'truce' in 1914 (Stanley Weintraub, in particular, is quite good), as well as the fairly recent film Joyeux Noel. The film is generally pretty good in the overall sense, though (like nearly all historical films I've seen) it falls apart in the detail.

This is for Heather Streidl (refer her posted message dated 30 Jul 2005), who has asked for information on her late father Angus Fraser, who served in Kohat (British India, now Pakistan) during 1920s. I happen to be the present resident of the house in which Major Ellis lived, whose daughter Molly Ellis was kidnapped by Ajab Khab in 1923. I can not say with confidence whether I will actually be able to find out the desired information, but I will definitely give it a good try. Meanwhile, I will request Heather to tell me all that is known about her father while he was here, such as the place he lived and died, his burial place, any other people who were with him while he was here, etc. This will help me trace the events of that period. Hello. I am trying to find out about my grandfather,he joinded the regiment as a boy and served in India and in the South African war . He then went on to serve right through the great war until he retired to become a member of the corp of commisionairs, his name was Daniel David Clancy. He was aged about 13 when his father took him to join up,if any body can help that would be great.
I'm trying to find out information about my uncle, Pte G. Burnett, who was shot by a sniper whilst serving with the regiment in Abyssinia prior to WW2 (possibly 1936-37). My uncle's family was from Huntly. I would be very grateful if you could help with any information as to this period in the regiment's history. Yours sincerely David Elliott

Hi Webmaster. Whilst serving with the Military Adviser in India during 1955/6 I had the opportunity to take a couple of photos of a guard of honour by The Gordons who I believe were serving in the Far East at the time. The 35mm colour slides show both the Gordons and the Indian soldiers at the ceremony. If you could send me a postal address I will send the to.
WEBMASTER'S NOTE: Address sent!! Hopefully I'll be able to add them to the site in the coming weeks!
In answer to the question posted on 20th June 05. Drummer G. Mowat of the Gordon Highlanders Buried at St Valerie Sur Somme, was my father. He came from Aberdeen. My husband and I are travelling to Scotland from New Zealand in 2007 and will be visiting the grave site while we are on our travels, and thanks to the writer we know the grave is still maintained.
Hi! all Gordons, I was very proud this year to march with fellow ex Gordon Highlanders London Association, and a contingent of the London Scottish, (I was their SPSI 1971/75) at the London Cenotaph parade. It was a sair struggle, I was recovering form a hip replacement operation. Trying to keep up was very difficult, Im sure I put everyone out of step, as I felt I was doing a Rolf Harris. i.e left, right, walking stick. Im afraid this will be this old sodgers last time on parade. , but it was a great honour , and I felt a great pride marching with some of my old comrades again, to remember our fallen comrades. Well done to all who took part. BYDAND.
WEBMASTER'S NOTE: Don't let Don fool you...he kept up with the March Past brilliantly. We might have been out of step, but is certainly wasn't his fault!! It has been my tremendous honour to be part of the Cenotaph march for the last two years and I am *always* amazed by the men I meet, walking sticks and all.
This entry has been moved from the Regimental Registry to this page:
my grandfather served with the regiment from 1928 to 1946. the early part of his service, 1928 to 1935 was spent in india on the northwest frontier. returning from there he went into reserve until call up in 1939. from this time he served in the orkney islands as part of the defence force and then went off to france around mid june 1944. his name is frank waterfield often known to his friends as tiny, his rank was cqsm 1st btt gordon highlanders. this man has always meant the world to me and always will even though he has now like all old soldiers "faded away". i would dearly love to contact any men who knew him and served with him as his military service is a little of a mystery as he never really talked about it. julian.waterfield @ btinternet.com

In company with over 100 comrades, relatives and friends, I attended the 50 anniversary service at Waynes Keep Military Cemetery, Nicosia, Cyprus, on Monday 16th October 2006, to remember those members of the 1st Battalion who gave their lives during the conflict in 1956, and are buried there. In a very moving ceremony, conducted by Fr Barber and in the presence of Col Tom Fitzalan Howard and High Commissioner, Sir Peter Mallett, poppy wreaths were laid on the graves of the fallen, by members of the Cyprus Veterans' committee and family and friends' tributes were also laid. The opportunity was also taken, on 12th October to honour the memory of Theodore Bogdanovich GC, who had done so much to improve the comfort of the Battalion in Xeros. "Bog" as he was fondly known was shot by an unknown person and because of his unstinting work on behalf of all members of the Regiment, he was buried with full military honours in the British Cemetery in Nicosia. His George Cross and other personal items are now on display in the Regimental Museum, in Aberdeen. Photographs of the Waynes Keep service are now on line and may be viewed by anyone interested at: http://Tommorrice.elvinphotography.com Anyone requiring further information, can contact me at MorriceT @ aol.com Tom Morrice (23185226 Pte Morrice T "D" Company, 1st Battalion 1955/57)
WEBMASTER'S NOTE: I have had the opportunity to speak with many of the friends and family members who attended this ceremony, and everyone of them was deeply impressed with it. They were all very appreciative of the organisers, who deserve a HUGE 'thank you' and 'job very well done.'

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen and whoever else is reading this.As former Sergeant of the Gordon Highlanders I am going to request some information regarding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).I understand it as a psychological condition, however I wish to research this phenomenon from a sociological prespective, and from this point of view its social factors that I require information,if information can be repressed in the brain then some thing or event, has to agitate the brain to develope this condition,so, housing issue's, employment/unemployment,divorce etc, this information will be submitted as evidence confidentially as my Sociological research Proposal at college if successful I will endeavour to pass this on to my MP. Kind Regards leslie
I was one of the event coordinators at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site of Canada's "Changing of the Guard" event this past July (2006). I was delighted to meet and befriend Ian Kelly and Dave Rowe from your group. The event was fun to plan, exhausting to execute and completely rewarding thanks to dedicated volunteers like Ian and Dave and the Bydands. I will treasure the memories of the gatling gun spewing flames into the wet night, and enjoying a pint (or two) of Changing of the Guard beer with many of the participants and organizers. Thank you all for your contribution, and thank you Dave and Ian for the gifts, but most of all for the laughs!
WEBMASTER'S NOTE: Hilary!!!! What a blast we had!!! This, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the neatest/funest ladies Yours Truly has ever had the pleasure of meeting. Those of you who were unable to attend the Changing of the Guard event at the Halifax Citadel missed an event of truly historic proportions. Extremely well organised, extremely enjoyable, we'd do it again in a heart beat. Our photos page really can't do justice to what went on. Ever heard brigaded Victorian formations fire in unison? Ask one of Bydand's members what C/Sgt Mic Macintosh said the first time he performed with Bydand in 1994...yeah, it was like that.

Pipe Major Charles Turnbull when Piping Instructor at the Royal Caledonian Schools Bushey was a very close and dear friend. He sent me to the London Scottish Regiment at about sixteen and I served in the Pipe Band before and after RAF Fighter Command national service. Living in Spain, Portugal and the Caribe in the sixties I lost touch with Charlie and Jean who originally taught me to dance about 1952. Gordon Turnbull was a budding young piper at then age nine or ten. I had a phone number in Livingstone Scotland and although I visited never found anyone who could tell me anything as to their whereabouts. Charlie was a great influence that has continued even today here in New Zealand where I founded the NZ Gaidhealtachd Feis in 1990. Can anyone tell me when Charlie or Jean died and where please. I would like to hear from Gordon.
Hi, I am doing some family history and I have found out that my great uncle died in cc camp in 1936. My question is what is the cc camp and how can I find records. I know it was a miltary camp due to my mother telli
